Restore in AWS of an Instant Virtualization

This article discusses the process and considerations when restoring from Datto Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recover to Amazon Web Services using AWS Application Migration Services.

Description

A restore of a Datto Endpoint for Servers asset that has been virtualized can be restored back to Amazon Web Services using their Application Migration Service. Information on performing the instant virtualization can be found here: Performing an Instant Cloud Virtualization for Datto Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN  Using the Amazon Application Migration Service may incur costs associated with Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud billing, which Datto is not responsible for. Any billing questions on using this service, should be directed to Amazon.

The process overview is as follows:

  1. Install the AWS Replication Agent on the instant virtualization of the Datto Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery asset.
  2. Wait until the initial sync is finished.
  3. Launch test instances.
  4. Perform acceptance tests on the servers. After the test instance is tested successfully, finalize the test and delete the test instance.
  5. Wait for the cutover window.
  6. Confirm that there is no lag lp (see additional resources on addressing this).
  7. Stop all operational services on the source server.
  8. Launch a cutover instance.
  9. Confirm that the cutover instance was launched successfully, and then finalize the cutover.
  10. Archive the migration task within AWS.
  11. Once the backups succeed and everything looks good in production, the instant virtualization of the Datto Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery Asset can be removed.

The Datto Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery agent will attempt to back up while the agent is running on the machine and the system has internet access, including the instant virtualization hosted by Datto and the cutover instance.
