Datto recommends that you install the agent on the hypervisor, then exclude the volume that stores your virtual machines.

For example, if the virtual machine disks are on D:\, back up C:\ and exclude D:\.

Finally, install the agent on each virtual machine to protect them individually.

IMPORTANT  Datto does not recommend backing up the entire hypervisor with the virtual disks and virtual machine files together.

Because host-level backups capture those disk images as opaque files, individual virtual machines are not directly recoverable and file-level recovery requires that you restore of the whole disk and mount it separately to reach the files inside.

Backing up each virtual machine individually gives you clean, granular restores directly in Datto Endpoint Backup v2.
