Creating a local data archive
Topic
This article discusses archiving Datto device backups to an external drive by using the RoundTrip Wizard. The wizard is accessible in the Synchronize tab of the Datto device GUI.
Environment
- Datto SIRIS
- Datto ALTO
- Datto NAS
Using your external drive
Your drive must be healthy to complete a local archive. It should not have mechanical or disk defects.
NOTE Running the RoundTrip Wizard for your archive will completely erase the contents of your external drive. Back up any critical data on your external drive before using the RoundTrip Wizard.
Creating the archive
Plug your USB drive into a USB port on the back of your Datto device.
Under the Synchronize tab in the Datto device GUI, click PERFORM A USB ROUNDTRIP SYNC.
Select any of the agents and/or shares that you would like to sync to the USB drive. Uncheck Roundtrip is for Cloud Sync and check Define custom passphrase. This option allows you to set a custom passphrase for the drive encryption, which allows you to decrypt the drive, with support assistance, from any Datto device. Selecting this option will expand with an entry window for the custom passphrase and a second entry to confirm. Do not lose this passphrase as support will be unable to recover it.
If you would like all snapshots included in the RoundTrip for the selected asset(s), leave the Select all snapshots box checked. If not, uncheck it.
Click Next to continue.
If you unchecked Select all snapshots in the previous step, click the Agent or NAS (on the left) to select snapshots to sync to the RoundTrip (on the right). Click Next to continue.
Enter an email address to receive an email notification when the archive is complete and click FINISH.
Accessing Data
The RoundTrip Wizard will format your external drive with a ZFS file system. The data resides in a ZFS storage pool with any snapshots that you selected (or all current snapshots, if you chose to sync the entire agent/share).
To access your data stored in the ZFS storage pool, plug the archive drive into a compatible Datto device, then contact Datto Technical Support.
NOTE If you need to recover data using a device from a different Datto product family (e.g., SIRIS to ALTO), contact Datto Technical Support.
Recovering an encrypted archive
If you encrypt your drive when using the RoundTrip wizard (not recommended for local archives), you must plug the drive into the same Datto device from which the data originated.
Recovering or migrating data from local archives created with the RoundTrip Wizard onto third-party devices using ZFS is not supported.
