Alert: Drive sd(x) has failed a Smart Status check

Topic

This article is about the alert sent out when one of the drives on a Datto device fails its SMART Status check.

Environment

  • Datto SIRIS
  • Datto ALTO
  • Datto NAS

Description

The alert informs you that one or more drives on the Datto device has failed a SMART status check. This alert can be an indicator of a potential drive failure.

SMART Status alerts works through the Partner Portal and can be enabled/disabled under the Devices tab for the Datto device.

You can view SMART Status error(s) through the Device Web interface. Under the Advanced tab, select Advanced Device Status and navigate to the Drive Status section.

Drive Status displays the following:

  • Device Drive
  • Serial Number
  • Type, Size
  • Power-On Hours
  • Power Cycles
  • Temperature
  • Health of the drive

Alert thresholds

Exceeding the following conditions can trigger a SMART Alert. Numbers are approximate. The exact parameters and thresholds will vary by disk manufacturer.

  • Raw Read Error Rate: 200
  • Reallocated Sector CT: 100
  • Seek Error Rate: 50
  • Temperature in Celsius: 55°C
  • Reallocated Event Count: 50
  • Current Pending Sector: 50
  • Offline Uncorrectable: 5
  • Multi-Zone Error Rate150
  • CRC Error Count: 0
    • Low numbers may trigger an alert, but pose no issue. A high number could indicate a bad SATA cable.

It's important to note that a drive that has exceeded manufacturers thresholds and produced a SMART error may not be failing or require replacement. A SMART error is an indication that further investigation and potential troubleshooting is required.
