Final error (-8 Not enough storage is available to process this command.)
Topic
When you attempt a backup of a protected machine, you receive the error message:
"Final error (-8 Not enough storage is available to process this command)"
Environment
- Datto SIRIS
- Datto ALTO
- Datto Windows Agent
Potential Causes

If there is not enough free space on the protected drive to run the backup, it will fail. Datto recommends maintaining at least 30% free space per protected volume, with a minimum of 10% free space per protected volume at all times. Check the protected volumes to confirm they are meeting the required amount of free space. If there is not enough free space to complete the backup, the volume will need to be excluded or space will need to be created on the volume.
Volume Utilization | Status | Comments |
---|---|---|
0-70% | Good | Utilization is good. |
71-80% | Warning | Utilization is outside optimal limits. Monitor the volume growth and look at cleaning up unnecessary files and moving non-essential data to other storage. |
81-100% | CRITICAL | Volume is becoming critical. Snapshots will start to fail, disk queue lengths will increase. Create space. |

This error code is an official Microsoft System Error Code(external link), that means, "not enough memory". Task Manager can be used to verify the memory usage during and before a backup is attempted. If there is not enough memory available to complete the backup, other resource intensive processes may need to be stopped to allow the backup to complete.

The system event log can show errors relating to heap allocation issues and potential applications that are causing it. Additionally Task Manager can be used to determine what applications have the highest user object counts. A high number of user objects in a process could indicate a potential leak if those objects are not being properly released when no longer needed. To view the user objects column in Task Manager:
Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
Go to the Details tab.
Right-click on any column header and select Select columns.
Scroll down and check the box next to User objects.
Click OK.

For Windows Server 2008, install Microsoft Hotfix KB976494(external link). You must reboot the protected machine after installing this hotfix, before attempting the next backup.
