Troubleshooting steps to take a backup fails to complete using the Datto Windows Agent with the error message:

"Critical backup failure during data transfer."

Environment

  • Datto SIRIS

  • Datto Windows Agent

Description

This is a generic error message indicating a backup failure. Detailed error messaging is available in the Agent Logs on the Datto appliance.

Prerequisite

Confirm the protected system meets all requirements from: Getting Started with the Datto Windows Agent. This includes

  • Proper amount of free space available on each volume

  • Updated version of the Datto Windows Agent

  • CPU & Memory requirements

Agent Logs

  1. In the Datto appliance's GUI, click the Protect tab, and navigate to the affected agent on the Backup Agents page.

  2. Click Show Backup Logs, to expand the device side logs from the backup attempt.

  3. Click Show Agent Logs, to view the logs pulled from the backup agent from the last backup attempt. A detailed error message relating to the backup failure will display in the logs.

  4. Search the Datto Knowledgebase for any errors shown for the agent to troubleshoot further.

  5. If you do not see any error messages, or if you cannot find a Knowledgebase article that matches the error you found, contact Datto Technical Support for further assistance.
