Datto Windows Agent - Error: "No hypervisor connection exists for this virtual host. Create a hypervisor connection, and start another backup."

Issue

When you try to start a backup of a virtual system protected by the Datto Windows Agent, you see the error message on the Protect page of your Datto backup appliance:

"No hypervisor connection exists for this virtual host. Create a hypervisor connection, and start another backup,"

Environment

Cause

The agent is configured to back up its VMX file, but a hypervisor connection to the host is not present on the Datto appliance. Agent-based backups of a virtual host which are configured to preserve the protected system's VMX file require a hypervisor connection.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:

  1. Create a hypervisor connection between the Datto appliance and the hypervisor which hosts your virtual machine by following the steps in our Connecting a SIRIS to a VMware Hypervisor article.

  2. Attempt another backup for the protected system and observe the results.
