Screenshot Verification failure: The system is pending an update

Screenshot Verification process reports a failure because the protected machine is performing a Windows update, or failing to complete one. It will report the error:

"The system is pending an update. Complete the update process and reboot to ensure successful screenshots."

Environment

  • Datto SIRIS
  • Datto ALTO

Cause

Windows updates are pending on the protected machine. When a virtualization if created to confirm bootability the Windows update is either failing, preventing the virtualization from fully booting, or is still in progress when the screenshot is taken of the machine.

Resolution

To resolve the Screenshot Verification failure, the protected machine will need to have the Windows update applied, then a new backup taken. Reboot the protected machine to apply the pending updates, in some cases multiple reboots may be required.

Once the protected machine has no pending updates, perform a new backup and test the screenshot verification of the new point. If the screenshot still shows a pending Windows update, a differential merge may be required.

If you would like to test a previous backup point to confirm usability, despite the pending update, you may perform a local virtualization (with networking disabled) using the following: Starting a Local Virtualization on a Datto Appliance.
