NFS Datastore creation failure
Topic
This article discusses the following error message when attempting to perform a local restore while leveraging a connected VMware host:
Failed to start vm: Failed to create NFS datastore
Environment
- Datto SIRIS
Description
When attempting to perform a Virtualization via Hypervisor to a VMware environment or an ESXi Upload, the Datto device makes a request to the host to create an NFS datastore as part of the restore process. If this fails, the restore attempt will fail with the provided error message.
Troubleshooting
Common causes for the host to be unable to create a NFS datastore as requested:
-
Permissions: Linux permissions might not allow external hosts to attach to NFS mounts. You can check permissions in VMware for the service account used to save the ESXi or vCenter client.
-
NFS server access: The host might not be accessible from the Datto device. Verify connectivity to the server and ensure it's accessible through firewalls, by the Datto.
-
Number of supported volumes: The maximum number of supported volumes for NFS might have been reached. The default is 8 datastores that can be mounted on the ESXi host with NFS.
-
VMkernel interfaces: The VMkernel interfaces on the ESX host might not share a subnet with the controller. You can add the network of the VMkernel interface(s) to the default allow.nfs.mount.networks property in the kaminoprefs.xml preferences file.
Please review the causes and if still unable to create NFS shares on the host, please reach out to VMware for additional troubleshooting.
