S6-(12 through 36) drive replacement

This article explains how to physically replace the array drive and the OS drive on the S6-(12 through 36) model of devices.

NOTE  Before removing any drives contact Datto technical support. There may be back end procedures needed before the drives are physically removed and replaced.

Description

You are able to replace the array drive, SLOG drive, and the OS drive on the S6-(12 through 36). Select the drive type below to expand the steps for replacing that drive. For layout identification, refer to the SIRIS 6-(12 through 36) specifications.

The array drives on the Datto SIRIS 6 server models are hot swappable. It is recommended to pause backups while pause backups while performing a swap to limit the amount of I/O activity. Support will need to assist in the replacement of the array drive, please contact support once you are ready to begin the replacement.

  1. Remove the faceplate of the device, using the release on the left hand side of the front of the device.

  2. The array drive bays will be the rightmost two drive bays (S6-12 and 18) or three drive bays (S6-24 and 36) and will be labeled. Press the release on the left of the drive bay to access the latch and pull the tray from the device.

    NOTE  Technical support can assist in identifying the problematic drive.

  3. Insert the new drive and tray into the empty slot.

Power down the device prior to removing the OS drive. Support will need to assist in the replacement of the OS drive, please contact support once you are ready to begin the replacement. Full replacement procedure can be found here: OS Drive Swap .

  1. Power off and unplug the device.

  2. Remove the faceplate of the device, using the release on the left hand side of the front of the device.

  3. The OS drive bay will be the leftmost drive bay and will be labeled. Press the release on the left of the drive bay to access the latch and pull the tray from the device.

  4. Insert the new drive and tray into the empty slot.

  5. Plug in and power on the device.

  1. Unscrew the latch on the case top. Pull the latch to release the top and remove it.

  2. Place your hands on the outside of Riser 2, by the blue markings, and pull up. There will be wires attached to the riser on the side facing the front of the device, these do not need to be removed.

  3. The PCIe adapter can be accessed from the underside, once the riser is detached.

  4. Pull the PCIe adapter to the right to remove it from the riser's PCIe slot.

  5. Turn the PCIe adapter over to access the 4 screws to remove the cover.

  6. Loosen the screw on the inside, to free the OS drive.

  7. Flip over the adapter and remove the heat sink/cover.

  8. With the screw loosened, you can move the pin holding down the drive enough to free the m.2 drive.

  9. Insert the new drive into the adapter.

  10. Tighten the screw on the backside to secure the drive.

  11. Insert the adapter back into the case/heatsink and tighten the 4 screws.

  12. Insert the PCIe adapter into the riser.

  13. Replace the riser into the chassis.

  14. Place the top back on.

  15. Close the latch and replace the locking screw.

Power down the device prior to removing the SLOG drive. Support will need to assist in the replacement of the SLOG drive, please contact support once you are ready to begin the replacement.

  1. Power off and unplug the device.

  2. Remove the faceplate of the device, using the release on the left hand side of the front of the device.

  3. The SLOG drive bay will be the middle-left drive bay and will be labeled. Press the release on the left of the drive bay to access the latch and pull the tray from the device.

  4. Insert the new drive and tray into the empty slot.

  5. Plug in and power on the device.

  1. Power off and unplug the device.

  2. Remove the faceplate of the device, using the release on the left hand side of the front of the device.

  3. The SLOG drive bay will be the leftmost drive bay and will be labeled. Press the release on the left of the drive bay to access the latch and pull the tray from the device.

  4. Insert the new drive and tray into the empty slot.

  5. Plug in and power on the device.
