Getting Started with Datto Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery Linux Agent

Topic

This article describes system requirements for the Datto Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery (formerly Endpoint Backup for Servers) Linux Agent.

IMPORTANT  Currently the Datto Linux Agent is unavailable for Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery and under maintenance. It is expected to be available with the next release. Release notes are available: Getting Started with Datto Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery Linux Agent.

Environment

  • Datto Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery Linux Agent

Description

System requirements

OS

Datto Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery Linux Agent supports the following 64-bit operating systems:

  • Ubuntu 18.04 (4.15 and 5.4 kernels)
  • Ubuntu 20.04 (4.15 and 5.4 kernels)
  • Ubuntu 22.04 (5.15 kernel)
CPU and Memory requirements
  • Datto recommends a minimum of 2 CPU cores for the backup agent, depending on workloads. If the agent is experiencing high CPU usage during backups with fewer than 2 CPUs, the production machine may require additional resources.
  • At least 1 GB of RAM must remain free during normal operations of the production machine for install and backups to run.
Disk space requirements
  • Each protected volume must have 10% of its space free (up to 10 GB).
  • Datto Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery supports adding up to seven Protected Systems, with up to six TB of disk space (total storage capacity) between them.
  • VMs on per VM billing will instead be limited to 1 TB managed disk capacity per VM.
Network
  • Port 443 on the protected machine must be open outbound.
  • Additionally, port 993, 80, or 587 on the protected machine must be open outbound. Only one of these three ports is necessary; the agent will try all three when attempting to connect to the cloud storage node.
  • At a minimum, the protected machine must have internet access, and be able to resolve the following addresses for the initial installation and on-going operation of the Datto Linux Agent:
    https://device.dattobackup.com/certApi.php
    https://cpkg.datto.com
  • The agent will use a TLS-based proprietary protocol for communication over the first port that it can reach.
  • Port 3262 must be open outbound for Bare Metal Restore functionality.
  • All protected machines must be able to resolve mothership.dtc.datto.com,agent-update.datto.com, dattolocal.net and valid-isrgrootx1.letsencrypt.org in the local DNS.
  • See Unified Backup networking and bandwidth requirements for detailed network requirements and WAN uplink considerations.

Other Requirements

  • The agent supports ext2, ext3, ext4, *xfs, FAT32, and NTFS filesystems.
  • *BMR is not supported for XFS file systems.

Considerations

Installation

Datto Endpoint Backup with Disaster Recovery Linux Agent Software can be downloaded from the protected machine, full installation instructions can be found here.

Previously installed backup software

  • Before installing the Endpoint Backup Agent, you should disable and remove all other backup software from the production machine. Depending on the software, you may need to completely uninstall it for backups to run correctly.

dattocli

The agent includes a command line utility that can be used to gather agent information.

sudo dattocli

The command will need to be run at a root level, either with sudo or as a root user. The output will display the following information:

  • Agent ID
  • Agent Status
  • Agent Type
  • Agent UUID

This information will be needed for agent pairing and will be requested by support for any case created.
